Durability: a scientific approach through odor control.

We usually think that the durability of a garment is done by strong fabrics, tough textiles. A well done fabric surely enhance the life of a cloth, but this is only partially true.

Some other people think that a garment well stitched is more durable, and yes this is true. But not enough.

Other people again believe durability of a garment is obtained when it is treated with respect and care: once again, this is true but not completely.

The activity that mainly affects the life of a garment is the washing. Every time we wash our apparel, our washing machines or our hands apply a mechanical force shaking the fibers to allow water and soap enter and clean. By doing this, abrasion and tear strength reduce our garment life.

Quite simply: why a t-shirt is less durable than a jeans? Not only because it is made by a lighter fabrics. The main reason is the numbers of washes!

A t-shirt is washed every day. A pant usually not.

This is why the less we wash the more we wear as we “stress” less our clothes.

In order to do this in a clean and hygienic way, it is possible by adding a proper finishing called “bio-static”.

This means that this finishing does not kill the natural and good bacteria which are also on our skin, but it furthermore “blocks” preventing their growth”.

To make it easy: by preventing the bacteria growth, we prevent odor. Therefore, we can wash the same t-shirt every 2 days, or the pant every 2 weeks.

Only by introducing this solution we double, I repeat DOUBLE our garment life cycle.

And the reduction of water and energy is the immediate result.

This is easy, but it is one of the most effective behaviour we can adopt to protect our environment.

In the below chart you can find some facts about the impact of washing for the environment.

Our Partner in Odor control

Polygiene is a Swedish company supplying treatments for the different fabrics. Their attention to environment is really high: their finishing is Eco Passport and Blue Sign certified.

How it works:  biostatic stay fresh technology by Poligiene

Protection against body odors and more. Based on a silver salt solution. Sweat, heat and humidity is nourishment for bacteria and they will grow and die in ever-increasing numbers. Absorbing, hiding, or delaying will fail at some point. This treatment simply makes it impossible for them to multiply. The result – it stops the odor at the source to make your items stay fresh, and it works for the lifetime of the garment.

Scientific data make environmental issues real.

Wholesafety Group tested the Polygiene odor control finishing after 100x washes by an independent Laboratory.

We applied Polygiene to our arcflashPPE made with Westex DH fabric. We sent to a third party lab, Intertek. They washes 100x times and then they check how much this fabric prevent the growth of bacteria. The result was as promised: values is 6! when with 3 it is considered a strong bacteria growth reduction.
